Camping gear at Tactically Prepped is built to work in real conditions — not just weekend car camping. Every item in this collection crosses over between recreational use and emergency preparedness: the same tent that goes on a hunting trip shelters you during an evacuation, and the same headlamp that lights a campsite lights your garage after a blackout. Ships from the USA, backed by our 30-day return guarantee.

How to Choose Camping Gear That's Actually Built to Last

The outdoor gear market is flooded with cheap products that look capable in photos and fail in the field. Here's what separates gear worth buying from gear that becomes landfill after one season.

Match the gear to your actual use case

Car camping and backcountry camping have almost nothing in common when it comes to gear selection. Car camping allows heavier, bulkier equipment — larger tents, cast iron cookware, full-size lanterns. Backpacking and bug-out use demands ultralight, compact gear that performs under load. Decide which scenario you're primarily buying for, then evaluate weight and pack size accordingly.

The five categories every camping kit needs

Shelter (tent, tarp, or bivy), sleep system (bag rated below your expected low temp, sleeping pad for insulation from the ground), light (minimum one headlamp per person with spare batteries), fire (at least two independent fire-starting methods), and water (portable filter rated for 1,000+ liters plus chemical backup tablets). If any of these five are missing from your kit, you don't have a complete camping setup.

Prioritize weather rating over features

Tents are often marketed by features rather than performance. The one spec that actually matters in the field: the hydrostatic head rating. Look for 2,000mm minimum for weekend camping; 3,000mm+ for reliable protection in heavy rain. A 3-season tent with a 3,000mm HH rating and a full-coverage rainfly is more useful than a "4-season" tent with poor construction.

Lighting: the most underrated category

Most campers buy one flashlight. Buy two headlamps — one per person at minimum — plus a camp lantern. Headlamps are hands-free and essential for setting up shelter, cooking after dark, and navigating. Lithium batteries last significantly longer than alkaline in cold temperatures, which is exactly when your lighting fails you.

Common first-time camping gear mistakes

(1) Buying the lightest tent available without checking the weather rating — ultralight doesn't mean weatherproof. (2) Testing gear for the first time at the campsite. Open every item, set up the tent once in your backyard, run water through the filter, light the stove before you ever need it. (3) Forgetting that a sleeping bag rating is a survival rating, not a comfort rating — if the bag is rated to 40°F, expect to be cold at 45°F.

Our Top Picks

  • Complete 72-Hour Fully Loaded Bug Out Bag — best all-in-one kit for camping trips that double as emergency prep
  • 100L Tactical MOLLE Backpack — best high-capacity pack for extended backcountry trips or multi-day bug-outs
  • 9-LED Rechargeable Headlamp — best everyday carry headlamp for camping, emergencies, and vehicle use

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between camping gear and survival gear?

The line is thinner than most people think. Camping gear is designed for recreational use; survival gear is designed for emergencies. But the best camping gear — tents with real weather ratings, filters that remove bacteria, fire starters that work when wet — is essentially the same gear in both contexts. We select camping gear specifically for its crossover utility in emergency and bug-out situations.

What camping gear should I buy first?

In order of survival priority: shelter (tent or tarp), sleep system (sleeping bag rated for your region's low temps), light (headlamp with spare batteries), and fire (two independent fire-starting methods). Water filtration comes right after. That sequence covers the basics for one or two nights in any temperate conditions.

How much should I budget for a complete camping kit?

For one person with reliable, field-tested gear: $400–$700 covers shelter, sleep system, light, fire, and water filtration. You don't need to buy everything at once — start with shelter and a good sleeping bag, then layer the rest in over time as your budget allows.

Are your tents and camping gear suitable for cold weather?

Yes. We carry 3-season tents rated down to freezing and sleeping bags designed for below-freezing temperatures. Check the hydrostatic head rating on tents (look for 2,000mm+) and the temperature rating on sleeping bags — and remember that sleeping bag ratings are survival minimums, not comfort numbers. Dress in layers and add a sleeping pad rated for the cold.

Can camping gear double as bug-out gear?

It can and should. A quality camping setup is a functional 72-hour bug-out kit. If you're buying camping gear anyway, spend slightly more on items that double as emergency gear: a tent rated for harsh weather, a water filter instead of relying on campsite water, a headlamp with enough battery life to last 72 hours. You're already buying it — make it dual-use.
