Natural Gas Leak Detector – 17" Flexible Probe, 0.5s Response, PPM & %LEL, Rechargeable | PT520B+
Find a Gas Leak Before It Becomes a Gas Emergency.
Natural gas and propane leaks are odorless at low concentrations — the mercaptan odor added by utilities is detectable by smell only at levels above about 1,000 PPM. This rechargeable combustible gas leak detector starts detecting at 50 PPM — well below the threshold where most people can smell anything — and gives you a precise, real-time digital readout in both PPM and %LEL so you know not just that there's a leak, but how serious it is. The 0.5-second response time means you're getting a reading immediately, not waiting for the sensor to accumulate enough gas to trigger.
0.5-Second Response Time — The Spec That Separates Fast Detectors from Slow Ones
Most consumer gas detectors have response times of 5–30 seconds. At 0.5 seconds, this unit responds before gas concentration changes significantly after you position the probe — you're not chasing a trailing signal as you move from fitting to fitting along a gas line. Position the probe at a joint, get a reading in half a second, move to the next. For a methodical leak inspection of a gas range, hot water heater, furnace manifold, or RV propane system, the speed difference compounds across dozens of connection points.
17" Flexible Gooseneck Probe — Reaches Where Straight Probes Can't
The 17-inch bendable gooseneck probe holds any position you bend it to — position the tip behind an appliance, under a range cooktop, inside a cabinet or wall cavity, or around a corner in an RV gas locker without moving the detector body. This is critical for inspecting connections that are accessible only from an angle: the back of a range, the underside of a water heater manifold, or the connection block on an RV regulator. A rigid probe or one with just a flexible tip requires body contortions to position accurately. The full-length gooseneck solves this entirely.
PPM and %LEL Dual Readout — Two Ways to Understand the Same Leak
The detector displays both measurement scales on the 4-digit LCD:
- 📊 PPM (Parts Per Million) — absolute concentration. Range: 50–10,000 PPM. Used for finding and pinpointing leaks — higher PPM as you move the probe closer to the source identifies the exact leak point
- ⚠️ %LEL (Percent of Lower Explosive Limit) — the percentage of gas concentration relative to the minimum threshold for combustion. At 100% LEL, the air-gas mixture can ignite. At 10% LEL (a typical first alarm threshold), the situation requires immediate action. %LEL tells you the safety urgency; PPM tells you the location
The 11-bar colored LED array provides a visual at-a-glance concentration gradient — green to yellow to red — that communicates urgency even before you read the numbers, useful in low-light or high-stress situations.
75dB Escalating Alarm — Louder as the Concentration Rises
The audible alarm starts at a baseline level and increases in frequency and intensity proportionally with rising gas concentration — rather than a binary on/off alarm, you get an audible cue that communicates urgency. A slow beep at low concentration, rapid beeping at moderate, continuous alarm at dangerous levels. The mute button lets you silence the alarm while still reading the display during inspection without losing the visual readout. Automatic shutoff after 10 minutes conserves battery if the unit is left running.
Rechargeable Battery — 3,000+ Cycles, USB-C
The built-in rechargeable battery supports over 3,000 charge cycles — effectively lifetime use for a household tool. Charges via the included USB-C cable from any standard USB port. No AA battery purchases, no alkaline leakage inside the unit, no mid-inspection power failure from a dead battery you forgot to replace. A built-in temperature sensor provides ambient reference data alongside gas readings for more accurate %LEL calculations (gas LEL values are temperature-dependent).

Where This Gets Used
- 🏠 Home kitchens — inspect gas range connections, burner valves, and supply line fittings
- 🔥 Furnaces & water heaters — check manifold connections and heat exchanger fittings during seasonal startup
- 🚐 RVs & campers — propane system inspection at regulators, hose connections, and appliance fittings
- 🏗️ Contractors & plumbers — post-installation leak testing on new gas line work
- 🏭 Industrial & commercial facilities — %LEL monitoring for confined space and combustible atmosphere assessment
- 🎒 Preppers & homesteaders — generator fuel line, propane storage area, and off-grid gas system monitoring
Pro tip: Always allow the full 30-second warm-up before beginning an inspection — the catalytic sensor requires thermal stabilization to reach calibrated accuracy. Use the one-touch ZERO button after warm-up in fresh air to set your baseline before moving to the inspection area. Inspect in a logical sequence from the gas supply point inward: regulator first, then the main line, then branch connections, then individual appliance fittings. This isolates leak sections rather than finding individual fittings randomly.
